Six months as an ERASMUS at the University of the Azores

8 February, 9:55 A.M.: SATA’s airplane arrives in Sao Miguel. An usual day for the flight crew, but an incredible day for two of the passengers. One of them is me, the other one is Diana, my friend and my colleagueDSC_0406.JPG and in that day our ERASMUS adventure begun.

When we decided to go for a semester as an Erasmus, we didn’t know what to expect. We just wanted to change the same old routine, to travel and to challenge ourselves by studying in another country and in a different language.

If you haven’t heard about the ERASMUS programme , I will tell you what you need to know. Briefly, ERASMUS was named after the Dutch philosopher Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam, who has traveled the world in order to expand his knowledge. At the same time ERASMUS is an abbreviation for European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students and is a European Union student exchange programme established in 1987.

Therefore, when you decide to sign up for this programme you have to keep in mind some things. You will be far away from home for up to 3 months, depending on the programme that you choose. The classes may be in another language that you expect to be. You will be asked to be flexible, to adapt easily to any situation and to have an adventurous spirit.

Said and done. Back in Romania, we were studying Journalism and we were in our last year, which complicated the situation a little bit. When we arrived here none of this have changed, but the subjects chose by us were not exactly as the ones that we were supposed to study in Romania.  Easily we adapted to the new situation and we started to go to classes. We had a lot of projects to do, many assignments, meetings with professors, exams, but we made it.

Being a student at University of the Azores gave us the opportunity to develop more and to gain more practical information that we will apply later in our career.DSCF1243

Now we are at the end of the semester and it feels like no time passed, like yesterday we arrived on the island. I believe that when you take such a decision, to apply for an exchange programme, you take a decision for the future. Such an experience will help you grow, to learn more about you and the world out there and will challenge you each step you make.

The man behind Barack Obama’s photos

In a few months, we will have a new President of the United States of America. This is a good opportunity to review the 2015’s photographic account of Barack Obama’s Presidency, published by his official photographer half a year ago. In this year of Presidential elections, we invite our readers to meet the official photographer of the President of the United States and his yearly “best photos” list.8c9434690-131020-pete-souza-hmed-1103p.nbcnews-fp-1200-800

The man who is behind all the photos with Barack Obama is Pete Souza. He is the Chief Official White House Photographer since 2009, and also the Director of the White House photo office. Thus, this is not his first time inside the White House. After he started his career in the 1970s in Kansas, between 1983 and 1989, Souza was an official White House photographer for President Ronald Reagan. He was also the official photographer for the funeral services of Ronald Reagan.

Souza can boast himself with many achievements since he first started. Numerous photojournalism awards including several times prestigious Photo of the Year, the NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism and the White House News Photographers Association’s yearly contest. Besides this, he also produced and published a variety of documentary books based on his work. First to be published was in 1992, “Unguarded Moments: Behind-the-scenes Photographs of President Reagan”, a coffee-table book, based on his almost 6 years in the White House. After 12 years, he published an updated book, “Images of Greatness: An Intimate Look at the Presidency of Ronald Reagan”.

Souza’s most recent book is “The Rise of Barack Obama” and includes exclusive photographs of the Senator Obama’s rise to power, featuring photographs between 2005 and 2008.

As the photographer of one of the most influential man in the world, his main goal is to be an invisible observer of President Obama’s role in history, disappearing into the background, while capturing Obama’s job from a perspective that isn’t typically covered by other photojournalists. His yearly “best photos” list includes more than 100 photos, focusing on more intimate angles.

“I not only found key historic moments from the year, but also chose moments that give people a more personal look at the lives of the President and First Lady. I’ve also included many photographs that rely more on their graphic qualities, including light and composition.” , Souza wrote in a post about the collection.
